on the rise

After taking a little time off from the blog, I wanted to share today that I’m taking a little more time to revamp Foodie’s Arsenal and do some spring cleaning and streamlining. I’ve been running the blog for over a year now, and have learned a lot of things about a lot of things in that time, so I’m excited to be rebuilding the blog with fresh eyes and a better understanding of what a site like this should be. So be ready– new things are on the rise, and they should be pretty cool.

Which means also that this is a great time for input if you think you have any (leave it in the comments below so we can all see it). What do you think the site needs? Is there anything that’s awkward or unnecessary, or more importantly, anything that could make the site a lot better?

One big change that I think will be helpful is that the new Foodie’s Arsenal is going to be built on a fluid layout, which means it’ll be a lot easier to use on all screen sizes than it is now. Since a lot of us are trying out the Kindles or whatever kids like these days (heh), it’s good to keep up with the needs of users and readers as we grow.

Another thing I’m considering is cleaning up the recipes so they’re easier to read. My goal in putting so many step-by-step photos in each recipe was to help make the cooking process easier, but I think at the same time it can make the reading process more difficult. It’s a lot of extra photography for me, so if it’s not a helpful feature it’s a good thing to update. The future recipes (sigh, and yes, maybe I’ll edit the old ones…) would be a little more streamlined and printer-friendly, and not so chopped up by little step by step photos. If that’s something you think is a good idea, again, leave your thoughts below so I can know.

Other than that, the sky’s the limit! What are good things about the site you’d like to see stick around/done more with? What are ideas that aren’t happening here that you wish we could work in?

Thanks for your input, and for your patience as we get everything updated.

I applaud that decision. Can you hear me cheering from over here? Seriously though, that whole step by step, here’s me chopping onions, here’s me adding a cup of sour cream is so overdone that I’ve just deleted all those blogs from my reading list in the last few months. Enough already. Show photos of techniques that have importance that aren’t all over the internet and call it a day.

I read food blogs for the same reasons I sit down and read cookbooks – I like to see what other people are up to and it helps me work out new recipes and streamline techniques. I write about food, I talk about food, I teach food, I am passionate about food, but man I hate those step by step photo food blogs.

awesome– that’s exactly the kind of feedback I need, Becky. I agree that I don’t often need every single step documented when I look at other blogs/cookbooks, unless it’s pretty uncommon or very technical. Thanks for the input, keep it coming!

I’m going to be a bit of a devils’ advocate – I love the step-by-step. I’m a confident enough cook that I can pull a recipe from wherever, and manage to make a reasonable approximation of it…but in the same way the Becky wants to see what people are up to, I want, quite literally, to “see” what people are up to….call me a visual learner. I enjoy the process as much as the product.

I also enjoy the way you write about the actual process of why you’re making something particular – what got you there. Please keep that. :)

I just started following your wonderful blog and will be most interested to see what you are doing over the coming months. I actually like the photo steps but am not averse to learning to do without them ;). Whatever you do is fine by us…just keep posting! :)
